Strauss Wary Of Indian Backlash At Trent Bridge

England captain Andrew Strauss today cautioned his teammates against complacency and said a bruised India would be desperate to turn things around in the second cricket Test here after their embarrasing defeat at the Lord’s.

England mauled world number one India by 196 runs in the first Test last week but Strauss said going by past records, the visiting team is expected to make a strong comeback at their happy hunting ground, Trent Bridge.

“They are going to come back harder at us, their records back it up. We nearly missed out on a win at Lord’s four years ago and they beat us comfortably at Trent Bridge,” the left-handed batsman said at the pre-match press conference.

“They would try to prove to the world they are better than they were last week and I am sure they would be.

“Four years ago, India never let us back (in Trent Bridge). They batted exceptionally well and definitely showed a competitive spirit. They showed they were not in England to make numbers. We have learnt our lessons,” he insisted.

Irrespective of a 1-0 lead, Strauss said England’s key to success in the four-Test series would be the form of his bowlers, who managed to keep the famed Indian batting line up quiet for a long period of time in the first match.

“The key is to bowl accurate and if there is something in the wicket, then to bowl them out cheaply. If there’s no help (in the wicket), then at least to make them struggle.

“Batsmen score freely when bowlers don’t bowl well. If batsmen want to break shackles, they need to take risks,” he said.

Zaheer Ruled Out, Gambhir Doubtful For Second Test: Dhoni

India were left grappling with injury worries ahead of the crucial second cricket Test against England with pace spearhead Zaheer Khan being ruled out and opener Gautam Gambhir being rendered a doubtful starter.

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said Zaheer will have to sit out of the game though he has shown huge improvement in his right hamstring strain and was expected to be fit for the third Test.

“As of now Gambhir is doubtful. We will give him some more time. It depends on amount of pain he can go through and still perform,” said Dhoni on the eve of the second Test starting here tomorrow.

Gambhir was hit on his right elbow by a swept shot from Matt Prior in the first Test at Lord’s on Sunday and even though he came on to bat, it is believed that his elbow is still stiff and not 100 per cent fit.

Gambhir, however, did come out to bat in the nets today after missing out completely on it yesterday.

If Gambhir sits out, it would mean an opportunity for Yuvraj Singh to feature in the playing eleven. It would still be a tough call for India to decide on who will partner Abhinav Mukund to open the innings.

Injuries have been an issue for India for sometime and Dhoni rued the fact that it’s been rare when he has been able to field a full-strength team in Test arena.

“As a side, we have constantly faced this problem. Whenever we play, we are not at full strength. It has happened constantly.

Indian Cricketers Don't Value Their No.1 Status: Nasser Hussain

In scathing criticism of India’s performance in the opening Test loss to England, former English captain Nasser Hussain said Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men don’t seem to value their number one status given how underprepared they looked in the match.

”I am so pleased that England won because they set the perfect template on how you should prepare for and then perform in a very important game of Test cricket.

”India were exactly the opposite. They just turned up with totally inadequate preparation and expected everything to be alright on the night. Do they not value their status as the best Test team in the world? They did not seem to here,” Hussain wrote in the ‘Daily Mail’.

Hussain said England have had the best possible preparation for the series and it is now showing in their performance.

“Everything that England have done this summer has been geared towards making sure their players are as ready as possible for this Test series, including Andrew Strauss playing at Taunton and Stuart Broad playing for Notts,” he said.

”In contrast, India expected their top strike bowler in Zaheer Khan and their premier batsman in Sachin Tendulkar to rock up without playing a Test since January and just have a bit of a hit and giggle against Somerset before the big one. They did not help themselves,” he added.

Hussain said the English team is in such fine form that India were perhaps not ready for them.

”India simply were not ready for them in this game. India have real issues. Zaheer is injured, quite probably because his body was not right for this game, and it is difficult to see how he can play in the second Test,” he said.

”After that match India just have a two-day game at Northants to get ready for the third Test, when they will again have little opportunity to get themselves right for the second half of the series. What’s going on with them?” he asked.

Hussain also criticised the Indian Cricket Board’s insistence on not having the LBWs covered under the Decision Review System.

”For us to have a halfway house, mish-mash of a decision review system in this series has been driven by India and frankly it’s confusing and pathetic. Either we have the full system or we don’t use it at all. Let’s not say we can have HotSpot because India like it but we can’t have Hawk-Eye because they don’t,” he said.

And they all fall down.

The chill in the breeze is inescapable here. Even in the middle of a mid-summer day, one can feel a wintry cold. On the final day of the first Test here on Monday, India must have realised some chilling realities about English weather and cricket. Jimmy Anderson & Co have become too hot to handle.
More than the 196-run defeat, the manner of India's surrender was galling. The final day's play raised doubts over India's ability to withstand the home team's rampaging fast bowlers. The series will provide an acid test to India's batting.
Anderson embarked upon a sustained and intense attack on the Indian batsmen and walked away with the most precious wickets in the Indian line-up. Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar, with 100 centuries over 450 Tests between them, fell to the accuracy, tenacity, guile and perseverance of the Lancashire pacer. He ended up with figures of five for 65 but both his pace colleagues — Stuart Broad and Chris Tremlett — looked equally dangerous.
India needed Dravid and Laxman to stay long to save the Test. But Dravid, fresh from his classy first innings century, inexplicably went into shell at the start of the day. It allowed the English pacers to dictate terms. He managed to add only two runs in 20 balls to his overnight score of 34. Anderson, relentless in his attack, induced an edge from Dravid.
Laxman completed his half-century playing some fluent shots in the morning but perished going for a needless pull. He would have done well for himself and the side with a bit of restraint. He was caught playing a pull off Anderson.
Gautam Gambhir, who batted at No 4, looked positive initially but Graeme Swann, the best spinner in the world currently, trapped him plumb in front of the wickets. Gambhir made 22.
Sachin Tendulkar, with great expectations from him, was off colour on Monday. He was visibly unwell and his foot movements were not as nimble as they generally are. England bowlers tied Tendulkar down with some accurate bowling. At one stage, he was static for 47 minutes and 39 balls before Anderson trapped him with an in-swinger. Off the previous ball, Tendulkar had a reprieve in the slips and prior to that he had survived a close leg before shout. Tendulkar made 12.
Suresh Raina, playing his first Test at Lord's, provided the lone resistance for India but it was too little if not too late. The left-handed batsman, playing his 12th Test, stood up to the English attack. But he too fell to Anderson's dangerous movement. Raina, playing his first Test in England, made 78.
Skipper MS Dhoni came but fell to the pace of Tremlett after England took the second new ball. Broad too tested the Indians with his pace and full length deliveries. He came hard at the Indians and was unlucky to have not got Tendulkar's wicket. He removed Praveen Kumar and Ishant Sharma in quick succession to hasten India's defeat.
India now go to Trent Bridge for the second Test with problems over the availability of Zaheer Khan. They had won in Trent Bridge last time the team was here in 2007. Unless they repeat that performance, the No 1 ranking might slip away from them.

Uruguay Beat Paraguay To Win Record 15th Copa America

Uruguay defeated Paraguay 3-0 on Sunday to win a record 15th Copa America with striker Diego Forlan grabbing two goals to take his international tally to 31 and complete an incredible family story.

Liverpool attacker Luis Suarez, the player of the tournament, was also on target as Uruguay claimed a first continental crown since 1995 and broke their all-time Copa title tie of 14 which they held with Argentina. For Forlan, it was an emotional triumph as he followed his father and grand-father into the record books as a Copa America winner.

"This really means a lot for me because my grand-father won it, my father won it and now I have also done it," said the former Manchester United striker, who took his international tally to 31 goals, a joint national record."Three generations have won this trophy. The name of Forlan will stay in history."

Suarez opened the scoring in the 12th minute when his drive took a deflection off Dario Veron and left goalkeeper Justo Villar wrong-footed. Atletico Madrid star Forlan added the second three minutes from the interval when Egidio Arevalo cleverly intercepted the ball to release the veteran attacker who confidently buried a left-footed strike.

It was Forlan's first goal in 13 matches as Uruguay, who knocked out hosts Argentina in the quarter-finals, were in cruise control at River Plate's famous Estadio Monumental.Suarez added: "We really wanted this. We are a united group and we deserved it. We had to fight like crazy to win this and we've achieved something great."

Uruguay, who were World Cup semifinalists in 2010, dominated the first half while Paraguay, who had reached the final without winning a game, were desperately short of ideas and inspiration.

They had been fortunate not to have been a goal down as early as the second minute, needing Villar to pull off a sensational, point-blank save to keep out a bullet header from Diego Lugano.

Paraguay, the champions in 1953 and 1979, had defeated Brazil and Venezuela in penalty shoot-outs in both the quarterfinals and semifinals after the games ended 0-0 in extra-time.

But they came close to pulling a goal back in the 54th minute when Nelson Valdez crashed a right-foot volley off the crossbar with Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera getting a slight touch to deflect the ball towards the woodwork.Just moments earlier, Suarez had muscled his way down the left, but his cutback for Forlan dropped just inches behind the Atletico Madrid man as he closed down on goal.

Paraguay again looked dangerous when Ivan Piris charged down the right flank before crossing to Christian Riveros whose flick was saved by Muslera. Uruguay remained in a positive frame of mind, bringing on prolific Napoli striker Edinson Cavani for Alvaro Pereira after 65 minutes. Cavani then teed-up Sebastian Eguren 10 minutes later but Villar pulled off a one-handed save despite being off-balance. Forlan then hit his 31st international goal in the last minute after being set-up by Cavani and Suarez.

Dhoni Reaping Fruits Of Seeds Sown By Ganguly: Mitter

Former Bengal all-rounder Kalyan Mitter, who will be conferred the Cricket Association of Bengal's Kartick Bose Lifetime Award, gave Sourav Ganguly the credit for Team India's success under Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Describing Ganguly as the best Indian skipper ever, the 75-year-old said that Dhoni is an 'okay' captain who is reaping the fruits of seeds sown by the retired Prince of Kolkata.

Best remembered for his stint in the Lancashire League in the 1950s during which time he played alongside Dattu Phadkar and faced the likes of Roy Gilchrist and Wes Hall with aplomb, the stylish right-hander said, “I will not put Dhoni in the class of Ganguly.”

“Ganguly was special - of a mentor class. He built Team India from nowhere (when the team was mired in fixing scandal). In my opinion Ganguly was the best captain India had,” said Mitter, who was also a part-time off-spinner.

Mitter confessed that he stopped watching cricket as it became an overdose following the advent of Twenty20.

“T20 is all entertainment and no cricket, something that affects the cricketer's mentality for a five-day format. Like a coin, it also has another side too. Cricketers are financially secure, unlike in our days.”

“I had stopped watching cricket after the World Cup. But I am waiting eagerly for the India-England Test series. It's the real test of character,” the septuagenarian, suffering from leukomia, said.

Mitter had earned a lot of praise from the legendary Phadkar who had once predicted that the former would become a star batsman for India.

Though the stylish Bengal all-rounder did not make it to the national squad, he proved his mettle against the likes of Gilchrist and Hall when he played for Rochadle in the Lancashire League.

Later, when the dreaded Gary Sobers-led West Indies team toured India in 1958-59, Mitter, representing Combined Universites, confronted the West Indian pacers duo smartly.

The West Indies tore apart the University lads for 49 in first innings where Mitter top-scored with 17.

“But I could not make the India cut that will be my only regret. I did not give up and continued playing. I must have lacked something for which I could not play for India,” Mitter said, disappointment writ large on his face.

Mitter, however, earned fame for Bengal side under Pankaj Roy as twice - 1955-56 and 1958-59 - they finished Ranji Trophy runners-up, losing to Bombay on both the occasions.

“Beating Bombay was like beating India. They were the powerhouse in a star-studded team boasting about nine Test cappers. On the first occasion, I was very young and remember Pankaj Roy falling sick. But we gave them a fight in our second final and came very close to win it before going down by conceding first innings lead,” he recollected.

Mitter represented Bengal from 1953 to 1964, before a job with Tata Steel took him to Bihar where he played till 1969, when he hung up his boots.

But he returned to Bengal with success, this time as a coach when the state once again finished runners-up in the 1993-94 Ranji season.

Mitter felt sad that the two-time champions Bengal are yet to figure in a Ranji Trophy final since 2006-07, and has a word of advice to the cricket administrators.

“Honestly, I'm out of Bengal cricket. I think the cricket season here is short. We must do something to have more cricket. We need more cricket grounds, regular tournaments. More four-days cricket,” said Mitter, who represented Sporting Union, Mohun Bagan among others.

Influences of Roy and elder brother Jyotish took him to cricket while Englishman Bert Wensley, during a coaching stint in CAB, spotted his talent.

But it was under the tutelage of Kartick Bose that he made it big.

“Getting the lifetime award named after my 'guru' is the ultimate reward for my contribution to cricket. I feel so proud,” he signed off.

Tendulkar Eyes 100th Century In 2000th Test.

Tendulkar Eyes 100th Century In 2000th Test.

Sachin Tendulkar at the peak of his considerable powers can mark the 2,000th test at Lord’s starting on Thursday with an unprecedented 100th international century at the headquarters of world cricket when India face England.

The only other comparable landmark is not promising.

Australia’s Don Bradman, who endured the same pressures and publicity which accompany Tendulkar, needed just four runs to finish with a test average of 100 at the Oval in 1948.

Bradman was bowled without scoring in Australia’s only innings, the most famous duck in test cricket, to finish with an average of 99.94, still 40 runs better than anybody before or since.

In addition, Tendulkar’s record at Lord’s is abject with a highest score of only 37 in seven innings. It compares to an overall test record of 14,692 runs at an average of 56.94 with 51 centuries in tests and 48 in one-day internationals.

Mumbai, Tendulkar’s home town, seemed the perfect setting for Tendulkar to reach a hundred hundreds in the World Cup final against Sri Lanka on April 2 this year. Instead he was out for 18, a failure soon overlooked after India’s dramatic victory.

The game is bigger than any individual and Tendulkar, revered by team mates and opponents alike, remains the ultimate team man.

At the age of 38, he is batting better than ever in a career stretching back to 1989 scoring 1,562 runs at an average of 78 last year. He now combines the dazzling strokeplay of his youth with the technical solidity of his middle years and with a tour of Australia in the offing later in the year the 100th century is only a matter of time if he does fall short at Lord’s.

“He’s phenomenal to still be going now and on the verge of his 100th hundred in international games,” England off-spinner Graeme Swann said on Tuesday.
“But hopefully he’ll have to wait six or seven months for that, because we don’t want him to get one in England.”

STATISTICAL MILESTONES

A number of other statistics make Thursday’s test already memorable before a ball has been bowled.

The first in a four-test series is the 2,000th test match in history and the 100th between England and India. If England win the series by a margin of at least two matches, they will overtake India as the world’s top-ranked side.

On the surface the match is a straight battle between England’s four-man attack and the talented and prolific Indian batsmen.

The rain which afflicted the recent series against Sri Lanka has not subsequently relented and the cool, damp conditions will suit England’s leading strike bowler James Anderson.

Swann acknowledged that the pace bowlers are likely to dominate this week.

“The trick is to put enough runs on the board as a team to then allow our bowlers to bowl them out twice,” he said.

India’s batting has been weakened by the loss of opener Virender Sehwag to a shoulder injury for the first two tests. They still have Gautam Gambhir at the top of the order and Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman in the middle followed by Dhoni.

Wicketkeeper Dhoni has been an immensely impressive leader, taking India to the first Twenty20 World Cup, this year’s 50 overs World Cup and to the top of the world rankings.

He symbolises the brash, new face of Indian cricket as displayed to the world in the Mumbai triumph and the Indian Premier League with a host of commercial endorsements which have made him a wealthy young man.

“It’s not the rankings that are important to us. What is important is to play good cricket and enjoy the sport,” Dhoni said during India’s sole warmup match last week.

“The rankings will take care of themselves. When you represent India and 1.2 billion have expectations from you, I think every series is important.”

Tendulkar, Kapil, Gavaskar, Sehwag Named In All Time Test Team.

Four Indian cricketers, including batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar and 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev, were today named in the Greatest All Time Test XI chosen in an online poll.

The other two - Sunil Gavaskar and Virender Sehwag - beat a host of legendary cricketers to be named in the two openers’ slot. They beat competition from the likes of Geoffrey Boycott, Jack Hobbs, Len Hutton, Hanif Mohammad and Herbert Sutcliffe.

Four Australians, two West Indians and one Pakistani also made it to Peoples’ Dream XI as more than a quarter of million people voted on ICC’s official website as part of the build-up to the England-India Test match at Lord’s to celebrate the 2000th cricket Test.

Tendulkar occupied the number four batting spot, one slot down Australian legend Don Bradman and one above West Indian Brian Lara, who was chosen at number five. The trio beat the likes of Greg Chappell, Wally Hammond, George Headley, Javed Miandad, Graeme Pollock, Ricky Ponting and Vivian Richards.  Kapil was chosen as the lone all-rounder ahead of the likes of Ian Botham, Richard Hadlee, Jacques Kallis, Imran Khan, Gary Sobers and Frank Worrell.

Australian Adam Gilchrist won the poll for wicket-keeper by beating the likes of Mark Boucher, Jeff Dujon and Rod Marsh while Shane Warne got the nod of online voters ahead of the likes of India’s Bishen Bedi and Anil Kumble and Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan.

Wasim Akram, Curtly Ambrose and Glenn McGrath were named in the three fast bowlers’ slots. The likes of Michael Holding, Dennis Lillee, Malcolm Marshall and Courtney Walsh missed out.

Joining a gym or hiring a personal trainer with a friend

Joining a gym or hiring a personal trainer with a friend has many advantages.

Foremost among these advantages are that you'll have a workout buddy, who can keep you motivated and keep you company while you get used to the gym environment and exercising regularly, and you'll save money because most gyms and personal trainers offer discounts when you join or train with a friend.

Just be careful to make sure that both of you are as committed to exercise as each other and be prepared for the time when your workout buddy isn't able, or doesn't want to, workout any more or as regularly as you do.

Hopefully by the time this happens (if it happens at all), you'll have made new friends at the gym or enjoy exercising so much that you are motivated and happy enough to do it on your own or find a new workout buddy.

Copa America; Brazil, Chile Fall To Shock Defeats

South America's soccer hierarchy was hit by an Andean tremor as Venezuela stunned Chile 2-1 and Paraguay shocked holders Brazil by eliminating them from the Copa America on Sunday.

Venezuela's stunning 2-1 victory over fancied Chile was the only one of the quarter-finals not to go to extra time, while two ended in penalty shootouts, Brazil losing 2-0 to Paraguay after Argentina went out against old rivals Uruguay on Saturday.

"It's a historic achievement but our players aren't satisfied with that, they want more, above all because we said we would beat Chile," Venezuela coach Cesar Farias told reporters.

"I'm surprised that after every match that Venezuela have played, every team that we've played against has said that we've played poorly or that we don't deserve anything. Well, that's fine. Let them continue to look down on us."

The semi-finals were left devoid of South America's big two, Brazil and Argentina, who had meet in the two previous finals both won by the Brazilians, and also Colombia, who had emerged as title contenders until they were upset by Peru on Saturday.

The semifinal line-up has Uruguay, on course for a record 15th title, facing Peru in La Plata on Tuesday and Paraguay against Venezuela in Mendoza.

Peru have been one of the weaker teams in the region for decades, while Venezuela had never been this far before.

Brazil, who drew 2-2 with Paraguay in the group phase, dominated their quarter-final in La Plata from start to finish.

But the Brazilians, who scored six goals altogether, failed to put away their many chances while Paraguay clung on with dogged defence and a brilliant performance from goalkeeper and captain Justo Villar.

"We worked hard, we were far superior (to Paraguay) and we didn't score a goal which is the most important part of football," Brazil coach Mano Menezes told the post-match news conference.

Missed penalties
Brazil fluffed their lines badly in the shootout with three penalty misses and one saved by Villar, while Paraguay did enough converting two of the three they needed to take to go through.

"Brazil should have won, probably in the 90 minutes," Paraguay's Argentine coach Gerardo Martino said. "We managed to clear two balls off the line and our goalkeeper other (chances).

"We played a totally different match from what we would have liked... It would be great to be able to say we planned it like that but all we can say today is there was a lot of sacrifice, heart, a good percentage from the goalkeeper and lots of luck."

Neymar and Alexandre Pato, who scored two apiece in the 4-2 win over Ecuador, missed chances and Villar saved from defenders Maicon and Lucio and playmaker Paulo Henrique Ganso.

Brazil's Lucas Leiva and Antolin Alcaraz of Paraguay were sent off for fighting near the end of extra time.

In San Juan, where Chile enjoyed virtual home advantage just across the Andean border from home, centre back Oswaldo Vizcarrondo put Venezuela ahead with a header from a Juan Arango free kick and Humberto Suazo equalised with 20 minutes left.

Venezuela's left back Gabriel Cichero scored the winning goal nine minutes from time, stabbing home after keeper Claudio Bravo parried another Arango free kick.

"If we divide all the matches we have played into halves, we only played one one badly, today's first half. All the rest was positive," Chile's Argentine coach Claudio Borghi said

Deshmukh Defeats Vengsarkar To Become New MCA President

Mumbai Cricket Association would continue to be headed by a politician as Union minister Vilasrao Deshmukh defeated former India skipper Dilip Vengsarkar by a margin of 47 votes in a straight contest to become the new president of the cricket body.

Deshmukh, a vice-president like Vengsarkar in the outgoing committee headed by another political bigwig Sharad Pawar, garnered 182 votes as against Vengsarkar's 135 to emerge triumphant in the biennial elections.

Deshmukh had the backing of Pawar after the Union agriculture minister became ineligible to contest the polls as per a clause in the MCA's constitution following a change of his permanent residence status from Mumbai to Baramati.

Pawar's panel members -- Prof Ratnakar Shetty and Ravi Savant -- were elected as vice-president and treasurer respectively while DY Patil Sports Academy's chairman Vijay Patil, who contested as an independent, became the other vice-president.

Two other members of the Pawar panel -- Dr P V Shetty and Nitin Dalal -- also emerged victorious to become the two new joint secretaries.

With this win, Deshmukh, a former state chief minister, ensured that he follows in the footsteps of Manohar Joshi (1992-2001) and Sharad Pawar (2001-2011) to become the 13th MCA president since its inception in 1930-31.

Like another former India captain before him, Ajit Wadekar, who lost to Pawar, ex-chief selector Vengsarkar was unable to snap the stranglehold of politicians in the MCA.

Despite some hectic lobbying over the last few days and the support extended by another former India skipper Kapil Dev in the run-up to the elections, Vengsarkar failed to buck the near-two-decade-long trend.

Vengsarkar had formed a panel with some of his erstwhile India and Mumbai teammates Karsan Ghavri, Balwinder Sandhu and Chandrakant Pandit who also contested the polls for 11 managing committee posts.

Reacting to the victory, Deshmukh assured the voters that he would continue the good work done by his predecessor.

Dhoni To Opt Between Yuvraj And Raina

Dhoni To Opt Between Yuvraj And Raina

India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni will face a tough task of opting between Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina for the number five spot in the first Test between India and England in the Lord’s next week.

It would be quite a dilemma for Dhoni when he will have to choose either Yuvraj or Raina - both left-handers, both aggressive, both brilliant fielders and both worth a few handy overs of spin.

Raina has been impressive in the Caribbean, where he scored 232 runs at 46.40 with three half-centuries on tracks that Rahul Dravid describe as the most difficult among all he has played in the West Indies in the last 15 years.

On the other hand, Yuvraj Singh showed his brilliance in the World Cup.

While Raina managed to impress no less than legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar in the way he flinched not to one single short-pitched delivery from the West Indian pacemen directed at his torso, Yuvraj can flaunt his statistics that shows seven half-centuries from the last 11 Tests he played and the success he has enjoyed against England with 46-plus average.

Raina can certainly claim that he deserves as much exposure as possible given the wheels of transition have slowly begun to turn in Indian cricket. And there is every reason to keep him battle-hardened and not a dispirited young man when the time comes.

However, Yuvraj, if sidelined now, might not make a comeback and his otherwise glorious career would show just 34 Tests with 1639 runs during a fractured career of 12 years.

Raina can be expected to take on the aggressive off-spin of Graeme Swann like he did to leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo on the first afternoon of Jamaica Test against the West Indies that was a game-changing moment of the three-Test series.

The presence of Yuvraj can make England flinch in the collective might of superstars in the visitors’ ranks.

It could take Stuart Broad out of the equation, not just as a bowler but also a batsman as England’s lower-half is presently a parody of its top order.

It could be pointed out that Yuvraj has already exhausted the innumerable chances he was given to rehabilitate himself, so it would be unfair if promise alone triumphs over performance.

But Raina, only 22, could meanwhile wait for his turn.

While Raina can be considered the best fielder in the team - equally competent in the deep or in covers as he could be in the slips - Yuvraj presently is the best bet against Kevin Pietersen who has a history of trouble against left-arm spinners.

A dodgy Pietersen will give India a massive advantage and Yuvraj, with his “pie-chuckers”, is the man to have around for such an occasion.

Purely as a batting talent, Yuvraj packs more punch than Raina. He has the experience to regularly scatter the bowling.

The Test spot is something which Raina would want to own badly and Yuvraj would be keen to regain for the remainder of his career.

And Dhoni would have to opt between form and promise.

He must know in his heart that Yuvraj deserves one final decent run. That, if backed now, Yuvraj would respond with vigour to protect India’s reputation and Raina would lose nothing if he sits out a series.

Ideally, both should play in the three-day game against Somerset.

If they don’t, then one may assume that the skipper has already made up his mind and the world would soon know about it.

Fitness Of Indian Pacers Will Be Crucial In England: Dravid

Fitness Of Indian Pacers Will Be Crucial In England: Dravid

India's middle-order mainstay Rahul Dravid feels the fitness of the fast bowlers will be crucial to the team's success in the upcoming four-match Test series against England, beginning next week at the Lord's.

"It's a hard one to call. England are playing at home, so they have that advantage. We're a good side, a settled side, and we've been playing good cricket over the last couple of years. If we can keep our fast bowlers fit, then we'll be very competitive," Dravid said.

Zaheer Khan will spearhead the Indian attack in the much-anticipated series, with the resurgent Ishant Sharma and S Sreesanth or Praveen Kumar likely to support the left-arm seamer.

The series assumes significance as it will be a contest between the world's numero uno and number three sides in this form of the game.

The fact that India beat England in their last visit in 2007 will also weigh on the home side's mind, reckoned Dravid.

"All series are important series. But this one is important because it's a series between two teams that have had good recent records, which gives it a bit more context. We won in England last time, so from that point of view England will want to do better this time," he said.

As far as key players in the opposition line-up is concerned, Dravid picked Graeme Swann and James Anderson.

"James Anderson has bowled really well. He's been the trump card. Obviously Graeme Swann is a top-class spinner. We first saw him in England bowling here last time and the boys rated him.

"He's come on leaps and bounds from then and has become one of their lead bowlers. Swann and Anderson are the key," Dravid was quoted as saying in the August issue of 'The Cricketer'.

Dravid, who averages over 65 in Tests in England, said Indian batsmen will look to be positive against Swann.

"He's an attacking bowler and that's one of the things that is different. He's not just looking to contain, he's looking to take wickets. He's not scared to toss the ball up and gets turn with good sideways spin. It will be a good contest against batsmen who are good players against spin, who will not be scared to take him on," Dravid said.

According to Dravid, the highlight of his 15-year-old illustrious career has been India's rise to become the world's best Test team.

"I'm really proud that India is the number one Test team. I've seen Indian cricket since 1996 and to be part of this journey and to see India become the No. 1 Test team -- not just for a short period of time because we've now been there for more than a year -- it's something I'm very proud of," he said.

BCCI Recommends Zaheer For Arjuna Award

The Indian Cricket Board has recommended the name of pace spearhead Zaheer Khan to the government for the Arjuna Award, according to BCCI’s Chief Administrative Officer Ratnakar Shetty.

“We have recommended only one name, that of Zaheer Khan, for the Arjuna Award,” Shetty told PTI on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old Shrirampur-born Zaheer, who made his international debut in 2000, would be the 44th cricketer to be bestowed with the award if the government accepts the BCCI’s recommendation.

Six current India players - Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, V V S Laxman, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Gautam Gambhir - have been past recipients of the government’s honour for their outstanding achievement in the sport.

Last year woman cricketer Jhulan Goswami was conferred with the award on the recommendation of the board

England Tour: Five Cricketers Leave For London

Five Indian cricketers, who were not part of the national side in the just-concluded test series against the West Indies, left for London to participate in the upcoming tour of England in the early hours today.

Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, S Sreesanth, who had all skipped the Caribbean tour due to injuries and health concerns, and Wriddhiman Saha, who was not picked, have been named in the 17-member Test squad for England.

The five cricketers boarded a British Airways flight from the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport here.  The other members of the team, barring batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, who is already in England, and Virender Sehwag, who is recuperating from a shoulder surgery, will directly travel to the country from the West Indies, where they defeated the home side in an ODI series and a Test rubber during the same tour for the first time.

India will play four Tests, one T-20 and five ODIs in England between July 21 and September 16, beginning with a practice game against Somerset (Taunton—July 15-17).  The four Tests will be held at Lord’s (July 21-25), Trent Bridge (July 29-Aug 2), Edgbaston (Aug 10-14) and Kennington Oval (Aug 18-22).
India had defeated England in a three-Test rubber when it had last toured the country in 2008.

Squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Capt), Gautam Gambhirn (vice Capt), Abhivan Mukund, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, V V S Laxman, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, S Sreesanth, Praveen Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra, Munaf Patel, Wriddhiman Saha, Virender Sehwag

We Could Have Lost While Going For Target, Says Dhoni

Team India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Sunday defended the decision not to press for a win in the third and final Test against the West Indies here, saying that his side could have lost the match while going for the target.

India, who had already taken an unbeatable 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series, were 94 for three just before the start of mandatory 15 overs while chasing 180 for a win before Dhoni decided to end the run chase.

"Not disappointed about stopping the run chase. We were risking a series win going after the target. We realised that it was not worth going for it after those wickets, we gave it a go but we are happy with the series win," Dhoni said after the match at the Windsor Park yesterday.

"We did well in this game. West Indies batted well actually, we are not disappointed in any way," he said.

West Indies skipper Darren Sammy said he was a bit surprised that India opted not to press for a win.

"I was a bit surprised that India ended their run chase but we will take it. We are very happy with the draw," he said.

Talking about the pitch and India's team composition, Dhoni said, "We were not sure about the wicket. If we go with a 2-2 combination and the track turns out to be flat, that can be a problem. We knew we had bowlers who could spin the all if it started taking turn, like Raina.

"Harbhajan was getting a bit of spin and bounce and he got valuable wickets, not much help for the fast bowlers, they did well," he said.

Dhoni said the series was a good exposure for youngsters and he felt good to see Ishant Sharma take responsibility.

Ishant, Man-of-the-Series for his 23 wickets, said, "This is my first series where I took the highest wickets. It's kind of an Indian track, slow and flat, but you have to put in the effort as these things are beyond your control. I am pretty confident about myself, looking forward to England."

Man-of-the-Match Shivnarine Chanderpaul said, "The whole series I was getting out in 20s and 30s, very happy to carry on past the three-figure mark. It's at the back of my mind it has been happening for a while now.

"It's always an honour (becoming the most capped Test cricketer for Windies), just shows what hard work can do for you," said Chanderpaul who scored unbeaten 116 in West Indies' second innings to deny India a victory.

Harbhajan Bags His 400th Test Wicket

Team India's star bowler Harbhajan Singh claimed his 400th Test wicket here on Thursday, 13 years after he made his debut.

Harbhajan became the eleventh bowler in the history of Test cricket to claim 400 wickets.

The Turbanator got his 400th scalp in the form of Carlton Baugh.

Harbhajan pumped his fist in the air, let out a cry and stood still as his teammates ran up to congratulate him.

The giant screen flashed his figures and the sparse crowd at Windsor Park, those sitting in the Indian and West Indies dressing rooms gave the bowler a standing ovation.

Ever since Harbhajan landed in Jamaica for the first Test match of this series, he had been eyeing his 400th as he was seven wickets short.

Bhajji's 400th wicket triggered the West Indies downfall in the first innings as the hosts were bowled out for 204.

Harbhajan got his 400th in his 96th Test.

While he becomes the third highest Indian wicket-taker in Tests after Anil Kumble (619) and Kapil Dev (434), Harbhajan has had to battle his share of criticism reaching here.

Harbhajan thus became the fourth spinner ever to take 400 wickets after Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne and Anil Kumble.

'Pie-Chucker' Yuvraj Ready For Pietersen

India's Yuvraj Singh said on Wednesday he was keen to renew his rivalry with Kevin Pietersen on the upcoming tour of England after being called a "pie-chucker" by the England batsman a few years ago.

"I know that guy well and I am really keen to throw some more pies at him and others around him," Yuvraj said.

"And if my pies can contribute and get Pietersen's and some other valuable wickets, I would be really delighted."

The Indian batsman and left-arm spinner, who returned to the squad for the England tour after recovering from injury, was called a "pie-chucker" by Pietersen during a home Test series in 2008.

One-day specialist Yuvraj, in and out of the Test squad since making his international debut in 2000, said the tour would be an opportunity for him to cement his place in the team for the longer-format.

"Test cricket is one area I would like to improve and do well. I want to be a permanent member of the Test side and I know that won't be easy," said Yuvraj, who has so far played 274 one-dayers but only 34 Tests.

"I will do whatever I can do to strengthen my Test records. The England tour will be one of the biggest challenges in my career but in every challenge there is an opportunity and that's how I would like to see things from here."

Yuvraj said the four-Test series, starting at Lord's on July 21, would be highly competitive as the Ashes-winning England side would be hard to beat on home soil.

"England is a very good team and of late they have achieved some tremendous results as a Test side, so beating them at home would be a big task," he said.

"But we also have a very good and experienced side to combat them. Our overseas record also has improved a lot in the recent times. I am sure this is going to be a very competitive series."

India named a full-strength squad, with batsmen Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag, and pacemen Zaheer Khan and Shanthakumaran Sreesanth returning after missing the ongoing Test series in the West Indies.

India, who won their last Test series in England in 2007 under Rahul Dravid, will also play five one-day internationals a one-off Twenty20 match during the tour.
